Achieving the Apple x A24 Aesthetic in Color Grading

Achieving the Apple x A24 Aesthetic in Color Grading

Introduction

Why do Apple keynotes and A24 films look so expensive? It isn't just the cameras. The color grade dictates the emotional weight. In this guide, we reveal the node structure we use to achieve that premium, cinematic feel.

The Color Philosophy

  • **Apple Aesthetic**: Hyper-clean, high dynamic range, perfect skin tones, and rich midtone contrasts. Very natural but polished.
  • **A24 Aesthetic**: Moody shadows, analog film curves, organic halation, and slight cyan washes in the blacks.
  • The Node Setup in DaVinci Resolve

    1. Node 1: Color Space Transform: Map the camera log (e.g. Slog3 or RedLogFilm) to Rec.709 color space.

    2. Node 2: Exposure & Contrast: Avoid clipping whites. Keep highlights under 90IRE. Roll off the shadows smoothly.

    3. Node 3: Skin Tone Qualifier: Isolate the skin tones and ensure they align perfectly on the vectorscope skin-tone indicator line.

    4. Node 4: Color Wheels: Add a touch of warmth to the midtones, and a tiny hint of cool teal to the shadows. Keep highlights completely neutral.

    5. Node 5: Film Emulation: Apply a custom film LUT (like Kodak 2383) at 30% opacity to bind the colors together.

    Summary

Cinematic color grading is about restraint. Avoid overly saturated blues or crushed blacks. Maintain the natural texture of the image and enhance details selectively.
