The Art of the Founder Interview: Capturing Authenticity

The Art of the Founder Interview: Capturing Authenticity

Introduction

Every great company has a narrative. But telling that story through a talking-head founder interview can be challenging. In this post, we break down our proprietary setup for capturing high-end, cinematic interviews that resonate.

1. The Psychology of the Interviewee

Most founders are not professional actors. When a cinema camera is pointed at them, they freeze. We solve this by implementing a 'conversation first' approach:

  • **Remove the Teleprompter**: Unless reading a strict PR statement, conversational responses feel 10x more authentic.
  • **Warm-up Session**: Spend 15 minutes asking questions that won't make the final cut to get the speaker comfortable.
  • **Maintain Eye Contact**: The interviewer sits directly next to the lens, ensuring the founder is looking at a human, not a glass element.
  • 2. The Visual Setup: Lighting & Lenses

We utilize a three-point lighting setup with soft, large modifiers:

    1. Key Light: A large Aperture 600d Pro with a Dome III softbox placed at 45 degrees.

    2. Fill/Bounce: A passive beadboard reflector to fill in deep shadows subtly.

    3. Backlight: A warm LED tube to separate the speaker from the dark background.

For lenses, we shoot on full-frame prime lenses (specifically the Arri Signature Primes or Sony G-Master 85mm f/1.4) wide open to create that signature creaminess.

    Conclusion

A beautiful interview is a blend of visual mastery and authentic human connection. In your next production, focus on making your subject feel at ease, and let the tech handle the rest.
